include categories in navigation menu ??

i'm wondering if it's possible to automatically call the categories into a sub navigation of the main navigation menu. eg: i have a navigation bar with home | contact | profile | catalogue. I'd like the user to mouse over catalogue and see the categories.

i realise i can do this manually using dashboard and creating a page for each category, but i'd like to find a simpler solution.

Re: include categories in navigation menu ??

Hello Andy,

I do this quite often so I know exactly what you are out to do. I just finished a site for a customer doing this as well.

Here is how to do it.

You WILL need to create a page to correspond with each category you wish to represent. Make them all children of the Catalogue page. Add the ItemPane to the Catalogue page.

Next create all of your categories in advanced categories. After, use the Cat_menu module and add it to your catalogue page (it will get deleted later). Go into the cat_Menu settings and select advanced categories to display. Next click on each category to gather the URL it points to.  Copy all the urls and go into admin--->pages. Then under each page representing a category go into the advanced settings and point it towards a URL. Paste the corresponding url that you copied from the cat_menu into that field and hit update. Do this for all the categories you wish to have under the Catalogue head.

Done deal. Now when you click the subcategories of Catalogue it will take you to the catalogue page but populate the itempane with the correct category. look at http://anniversarygiftdesign.com I have done this with the "Anniversary Gifts" up top and the customer still wanted it in the menu. However for you, I would delete the menu module once you have all the urls and it will all be from the DNN Nav menu instead.

Post back if I made no sense and you need some additional assistance.

Re: include categories in navigation menu ??

thanks for the idea, but it seems to be a little complicated to teach a client to do. (am i the only one with daft clients?)
but it did make me start thinking outside the box. And i thought, well why can't i add the menuNF module into the navigation area. So what i've done is added the menuNF next to the Solpart menu, and formatted them the same. so they look like they belong to the same code. I've added an advanced category called category, and added the sub categories under this.
i'm still working on the formatting to make them exactly the same, but your welcome to have a look at the result.
(sorry, site is a little slow, as i haven't finished compressing stuff yet)
